Minnesota Trucking Related Fatalities: Lowest in 10 Years

Continuing a downward trend, cars and trucks collided less often in Minnesota during the past year than any year in the last decade.

According to statistics reported in the latest edition of Minnesota Motor Vehicle Crash Facts, published by the Minnesota Department of Public Safety, the number of truck-related fatalities has trended downward from 94 in 1999 to 58 in 2009 showing a 38.2% decrease.

This is the lowest number in 10 years.

The safety report for the last year shows the trend continues with a 26.5% decrease of fatal crashes from 2008 to 2009. "Preventing crashes is the number one priority of every professional truck driver," said John Hausladen, president of the Minnesota Trucking Association. "This data is welcome news and a real encouragement to our on-going safety efforts. Most people don't realize that the safest drivers on the road are truck drivers." The Minnesota Trucking Association (MTA) has advanced a number of safety initiatives in recent years, including the recent "Keep Both Hands on the Wheel" safety campaign encouraging drivers to put down the cell phones and focus on driving. The MTA has been a key partner in the state's Towards Zero Deaths initiative and actively lobbied to pass the state's primary seatbelt law in 2009. In the past, the organization has also called for a national maximum 65 mile per hour speed limit for all vehicles.

History

August 31, 1983 was the beginning of a long term success story. Donald and Bonnie Sullivan opened an insurance agency by the name of Administrative Safety Services, Inc. in Roseville, Minnesota with their first employee being their daughter, Lisa (Sullivan) Burnside. The vision then was to be a comprehensive company supplying insurance and related services to the public.

By 1984, Donald and Bonnie had changed the focus of the agency from general insurance to insuring the transportation industry. They made this commitment, due to the complexity of the transportation industry and its special insuring needs. Over the next few years, the agency released accounts that did not fall under the category, yet grew significantly in the number and size of accounts written. To assist in this endeavor, their son, Shawn Sullivan, joined them as a valuable salesperson in 1984 with Michael O'Neil, their nephew, following in 1987.

Their daughter, Kimberly (Sullivan) Schwartz joined the agency in 1987 to provide profitable financial results.

The agency name was changed on October 26, 1989 to Minnesota Truck Writers, Inc. This provided a better understanding of the agency's unique focus on providing transportation insurance.

On January 1, 1996, the Sullivan family purchased Ringnell Insurance in Welcome, Minnesota. This agency is now called Administrative Risk Consultants, Inc. DBA: Truck Writers. The two agencies share the focus on the transportation industry by providing quality services.

In 2005, Truck Writers launched BOSS Insurance Group for general business, life, health, and personal lines.

In 2008, Truck Writers purchased MacKenzie Agency – a well established truck, general business, and personal lines agency in St. Peter, Minnesota.
