Top 3 Questions on Bobtail/Non-Trucking Coverage

By June 29, 2016April 26th, 2019No Comments

Oftentimes, trucking insurance is about as easy to comprehend as why the universe exists. It’s in place for some reason, and we are glad it is, but all the minute details get in the way of our proper understanding of it.

In an effort to help those within the trucking industry better understand trucking insurance, we are going to begin having Top Questions posts. These posts are inspired by real questions our clients ask us. Our first post will cover the top 3 questions we hear about bobtail/non-trucking liability.

1. Are there differences between Non-Trucking Liability and Bobtail Coverage?

The term “Bobtail Insurance” is sometimes used in tandem with “Non-Trucking Use Liability Insurance,” or NTLI. This is the type of coverage provided to an owner operator when s/he is not under dispatch to the motor carrier. In the event of an accident or damage, the NTLI would respond to the claim rather than the driver’s primary auto liability insurance. These terms essentially describe the same type of coverage, which protects your truck when it’s not on dispatch (i.e. during repairs, moving to a new address, having your truck detailed, etc.).

2. Do I need Bobtail/Non-Trucking Liability Insurance?

When you’re under dispatch, the company that you haul for covers insurance. The Bobtail/Non-Trucking Liability policy protects you when you’re not under dispatch, such as having repairs done, getting the truck cleaned, etc.
If you haul under your own authority, you may not need bobtail/non-trucking liability insurance. If the primary liability is in the name of you or your corporation, and you own the truck, then you would not be required to carry bobtail liability.

3. What do I need in order to obtain Bobtail/Non-Trucking Liability Coverage?

  • A permanent lease agreement (longer than 30 days)
  • Truck year, make, VIN #
  • Drivers Name, License #, Date of Birth
  • Loss Payee Information (for physical damage only)
  • 3 Years of experience in most cases
