On October 23rd, the American Trucking Associations (ATA) and the American Transportation Research Institute (ATRI) published the results of the 2017 Top Industry Issues survey.

ATRI developed the “Top Ten” list using a formula assigning quantitative values to respondents’ rankings of issues facing the industry. The report presents the findings of the 2017 annual survey, and compares the findings of previous year’s results.

Here are the top 10 issues according to motor carriers and commercial drivers:

  1. Driver Shortage
  2. ELD Mandate
  3. Hours-of-Service (HOS)
  4. Truck Parking
  5. Driver Retention
  6. Compliance, Safety, Accountability (CSA)
  7. Cumulative Economic Impacts of Trucking Regulations on the Industry
  8. Driver Distraction
  9. Transportation Infrastructure / Congestion / Funding
  10. Driver Health and Wellness

2016 Top 10 Issues

Summary

Among all respondents, driver shortage surged six spots to top this year’s list of industry concerns. Driver shortage surpassed the ELD mandate, which fell to second position. Additionally, HOS rules moved down to the number three spot, while the lack of available safe parking for trucks held steady as the fourth-biggest industry issue. Finally, further concern over high levels of industry turnover caused driver retention to climb three positions and round out this year’s top five.
